Overview The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing. PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science. Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. Responsibilities The Computational Mathematics Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is offering a part-time internship for high school student with strong interest in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and image processing. This is a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research by contributing to meshing algorithm and geometrical analysis of porous structures through programming and scientific computing. Key Responsibilities: Study and enhance an existing meshing algorithm implemented in MATLAB; translate it into Python for broader usability and performance. Process microscopic images of porous materials and convert images into pixel-based matrix representations for computational analysis. Create Python-based visualizations of generated meshes and porous structures to support analysis and reporting. Document methodologies, results, and insights as a scientific report. Hands-on skills in algorithm development, computational geometry, and scientific programming using MATLAB and Python.
